What are Phthalates?
Phthalates are compounds used as plasticizers. Plasticizers are used to soften PVC to increase its durability, flexibility and translucency for example. If you are already familiar with phthalates, you may also know about how BPAs are used in PVC.
Phthalates are used in the production of a wide variety of vinyl based bathroom products. Just as with BPAs, studies have linked phthalates to several undesirable health conditions.
The general consensus is that in order for significant amounts of phthalates to be absorbed by the human body, the following two conditions must be met.
In order for phthalates to be leached, extreme repetition of heating and cooling must occur.
Consistent Long-Term Exposure:
Due to the quantity of phthalate released, consistent long-term exposure is required. Intermittent exposure has been ruled out as a major risk.
